Zoo Day began with some tips for campaigning to change behaviour which were aimed at supporting project groups in their goal of protecting Manly’s Little Penguins.
Students were reminded of the importance of accurate research and the need for a unique approach. Next came the Penguin Q & A where a panel of penguin wardens, zookeepers and environmental officers educated us about the habits of Little Penguins, what injuries bring them to the Zoo and how they are rehabilitated. This was followed by the very popular Seal Show.
The rest of the day’s program included a visit to the underwater viewing area and a talk from keeper Liv. Liv introduced the new live penguin webcam and shared her deep knowledge of penguins and the Zoo routines around them. The Conservation in Action lesson showed us how the Greater Bilby Sanctuary at Western Plains Zoo was successfully created through a design process that identified and removed the threats from predators. This session included a visit from Edna the Echidna, who helped connect students to wildlife.
