What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

Our students can take part in HPGE opportunities in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

● At Manly Village, high potential and gifted education is a key part of everyday learning. We challenge our students to develop as deep, innovative, creative and critical thinkers.

● Teachers regularly assess individual student needs and work with our curriculum leaders to design and implement lessons that meet the learning needs of all students. This may include adjusting the pace and complexity of lessons to promote higher-order thinking.

● Learning tasks are designed to allow flexibility in the way students present their learning.

● Teachers provide students with strengths-based feedback and individual goal setting.

● Students are grouped in response to identified student needs, allowing all students to learn at their point of need.

● Our teachers work closely with our Learning and Enrichment team to ensure classrooms are safe learning environments that encourage confidence, risk-taking and perseverance.

● The Premier’s Spelling Bee promotes our students’ vocabulary development and attention to detail in competitive settings.

● The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, which promotes student voice and confidence in expressing their ideas.

● Opportunities provided by the NSW Department of Education's Arts Unit, including the Sydney North Dance Festival and the Arts Alive Drama Program.

● The Premier’s Debating Challenge helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.

● The Representative School Sport Pathways enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, in a wide range of sports.
